Sewing Machine Needles Point

Needle Points

Needles fall into three primary categories -- ball point, sharp, and rounded-sharp. It is important to use the correct needle. Ball point needles are designed to avoid making holes in knit or loosely woven materials. The cross fibers which constitute the knit or loosely woven materials are relatively far apart as compared to those in tightly woven materials. If a knit strand of thread is cut with a sharp needle, it produces a hole that will enlarge when the loose fibers pull back from the cut. To prevent this, the ball point needle is designed to push aside the individual strands of the knit. This assumes that the ball point needle point is in good condition. Sharp needles are designed for woven fabrics. Because of the tightness of the weave, individual cut fibers will not pull away and make holes.
    Different Parts of Needle

Sewing Machine Needles

Regular Point (Style 2020) needles are used for all woven fabrics. This needle will penetrate the fabric threads of woven fabrics.
Ball Point (Style 2045) needles are used for sewing on knits; the rounded tip allows the needle to pass between the fabric threads by separating them. (Using a regular point needle on knit fabric will result in skipped stitches and fabric damage, causing it to curl.)
Chromium Regular Point (Style 2000) needles are recommended for sewing woven fabrics on all SINGER® and QUANTUM® embroidery machines. This stronger needle is longer lasting and will tolerate the high stitching speed of embroidery machines.
Chromium Ball Point (Style 2001) needles are recommended for sewing knit fabrics on all SINGER® and QUANTUM® embroidery machines. This stronger needle is longer lasting and will tolerate the high stitching speed of embroidery machines.
Denim or Jeans (Style 2026) needles are recommended for sewing denim, jeans and canvas.
Twin Needle (Style 2025) is used for stitching two closely spaced parallel rows at a time - for decorative stitching.
Hemstitch or Wing-Needle (Style 2040) creates a small hole in the fabric as is sews and is used in heirloom sewing. Use natural woven fibers like linen & cotton for best results.
Wedge-Point (Style 2032) needles are for leather and vinyl.

Serger/Overlock Machine Needles

Regular Point (Style 2054-42) serger needles are used for all woven fabrics. This needle will penetrate the fabric threads of woven fabrics. For use on SINGER® model 14U serger/overlock machines.
Ball Point (Style 2054-06) serger needles are used for sewing on knits; the rounded tip allows the needle to pass between the fabric threads by dividing the them. (Using a regular point needle on knit fabric will result in skipped stitches and fabric damage, causing it to curl.) For use SINGER® model 14U serger/overlock machines.
Chromium (Style 2022) serger needles are recommended for SINGER® model QUANTUMLOCK® 14T and ULTRALOCK® 14SH serger/overlock machines.

Types of Sewing Needle Point in Garments:

In Apparel industry sewing needle point is varied according to the garments, fabrics, accessories, and design. Different types of needle point are used for the different sewing purpose on the sewing floor.
Generally there are two types of needle point used in garments. They are as follows-
  1. Cutting Point Needles
  2. Cloth Point or Round Point Needles

1. Cutting Point Needles:

  • Normally cutting point needles are used for sewing of sheet type materials like plastic, leather or other materials.
  • Because, in these materials there is no gap within the structure. So the needle point must prepare sufficient hole in the material so that the needle blade and thread can pass through it without excessive friction.
  • Mainly cutting points are divided into three types-
a. Wedge Point
b. Cross Point
c. Twist Point

2. Cloth Point or Round Point Needles:

  • The pointed needles which are used for sewing fabrics are called cloth point or round point needles.
  • The point of needle should be round in shape but the shape of tip depends on the fabrics like woven or knitted fabrics as required.
  • According to the fabrics cloth point needles are divided into two types-
A. Ball Point Needle
B. Set point Needle

A. Ball Point Needle:

Generally ball point needles are used for sewing knitted fabrics. Because:-
“The threads in the knitted fabrics are bounded in loop form. If any thread of loop is drawn-off due to any reason, then the whole structure of the fabric starts to be opened out. For this reason the point of needle should be as to prevent the opening of structure of knitted fabrics. As a result ball point needles are used for sewingthis kind of fabrics”.

Generally three types of ball point needles are used. They are as follows-

  1. Light ball point needle.
  2. Medium ball point needle.
  3. Heavy ball point needle. (Widely used for finer needles)

    B. Set Point Needle:
    • Generally set pointed needles are used for sewing woven fabrics.
    • There is a less possibility of fabric damage with set point needle in woven fabric instead of knitted fabric.
    • Set point needles are mainly three types-
    1. Slim set point needle: Used for sewing densely woven fabric or top stitching like collar, cuff and pockets.
    2. Medium set point needle: Most of the fabric can be sewn by this type of needle and knitted fabric can also be sewn.
    3. Heavy set point needle: Generally heavy set point needle is used for sewing buttons. There is a less possibility of button deflection due to use of heavy point needle.
