SEWING NEEDLE PARTS
1. Butt
  • The end of the needle.
  • The butt determines the length of the needle when it is fully inserted into the needle bar of the sewing machine.
2. Shank
  • the upper part of the needle.
  • may be cylindrical or have a flat side.
  • larger in diameter than the rest of the needle for reason of strength.
3. Shoulder
  • Intermediate between the shank and the blade.
  • It is also called the shaft.
4. Blade
  • Below the shoulder of the blade to the eye of the needle.
  • The longest part of the needle.
  • Accommodates the groove, the eye, and the scarf.
  • The blade reduces the fabric resistance as the needlepoint and its eye passes through the fabric.
  • The greatest amount of friction.
5. Long Groove
  • The slit above the needle eye should be large enough to "cradle" thread for smooth stitches.
  • Provides a protective channel in which the thread is drawn through.
  • A Correctly shaped long groove of a depth matched to the thread diameter offers considerable protection to the thread.
6. Short Groove
  • It extends a little above and below the eye.
  • Its function is to assist in the formation of the loop in the needle thread.
7. Scarf
  • The concave section above the eye of the needle.
  • Indentation at the back of the needle.
  • A long scarf helps eliminate skipped stitches by allowing the bobbin hook to loop thread more easily.
8. Eye
  • Hole in the end of the needle through which thread passes.
  • The hole through which the thread passes.
  • The eye is located below the scarf.
  • Needle size and type determine the size and shape of the eye.
9. Point
  • · It is the part from the needle eye to the tip.
  • · minimizes the damage of the fabric.
  • · Also, the proper care should be taken to select the needle-point appropriate for fabrics.
10. Tip
  • · The ending edge of the needle is called tip.
  • · It helps to penetrate the needle into fabric without any damage.
  • · It helps to create holes in the fabric during sewing.
